Location: Pier 13, 4601 Newgate Ave, Baltimore
Topics include: Liberty Ship history and the triple expansion steam engine, piloting and celestial navigation, cargo handling, shipboard firefighting and damage control, defensive weaponry, in-water lifeboat operations and more. You will learn the duties of a WWII Merchant Seaman as you operate the original steam winches moving cargo from pier side to the ship’s hold, chart courses, navigate and operate the radar in the wheelhouse, operate ship’s fire pump and steering gear under emergency conditions, anti-aircraft gunnery training, transmit messages by signal flags and abandon ship in the lifeboats!.
Merchant Seaman Experience includes onboard accommodations in original crew cabins Friday and Saturday night, secure parking on the pier, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinners on board the ship. (Optional stay aboard Sunday night with meals included for $50 extra) Included with the package you will receive a one year membership in Project Liberty Ship and original World War II training manuals by e-mail in advance of the session.
